A lake is the landscape’s most beautiful and expressive feature. Its earth’s eye: looking into what the beholder measures the measure of his own nature.
– Henry David Thoreau
Pangong Tso , Tibetan for “high grassland lake”, also referred to as Pangong Lake, is an endorheic lake in the Himalayas situated at a height of about 4,350 m (14,270 ft.). A blue speck discovered amidst the shining sandy mountains. And the speck grows bigger and bigger to a long blue strip of never ending water body that challenges our eyes to think beyond the horizon. The eerie silence of the region could make you feel like a castaway-standing all alone amidst these mighty mountains. The arduous terrain en route to this land lock lake is like icing on the cake for adventure freaks, surpassing the steepest ascent of Chang la pass, the third highest motor able peak in the world (17586 ft.)
The road seems never ending and despair gripped in many a times. This brackish water lake spreads about 134 kms in length and is about 5 kms. Wide at its broadest point across the border to China. Reaching there you have to admit that India truly is a land of diversity in every respect. The topography of this lake is breathtaking –an impeccable landscape. It was like a masterpiece painting created by God.
The crystal clear water is void of aquatic life. The only fauna to be seen are the migratory birds .The gushing wind were creating ripple all over the lake and the sound of the ripples hitting the banks were so soothing to the ears. Gazing at the shadows of clouds forming different shapes on the mountains, we were almost in a state of oblivion. As dusk was falling, ripples were growing bigger and wind faster.
The mighty Pangong Lake is also famous for being a popular shooting spot for some successful Bollywood movies like 3 idiots and Jab Tak Hai Jaan.
During winters the lake freezes completely, which itself is a great experience to witness if you have seen the other colors of the lake. Beautiful, panoramic and mystical, the reflections of the spectacular Changchenmo mountain range shimmering in the ever-changing blues of the lake’s water, the serenity and purity of this marvelous place deserves a standing ovation.
So, this is what we call as Pangong Tso. It is one of those places that everyone has to put on their bucket list as “See once before you die”.
Till then- KEEP TRAVELLING. KEEP WANDERING.
